T&A Mämmelä Ltd is the leading manufacturer of Rotating Biological Contactors (RBCs) in the Nordic countries.
There are over 200 of our manufactured RBCs in use in Finland.
RBCs have the lowest energy requirement among biological purification processes.
Operating Principles
Organic substances in dissolved form in wastewater are converted by microorganisms into settling floc on the RBCs. RBCs consist of circular-profiled discs attached to a horizontally rotating shaft. As the disc surfaces rotate, they are alternately in water and in the air.
When the disc surfaces receive nutrients (in the water) and oxygen (in the air), biomass forms on the surfaces, absorbing organic substances. The surface layer of biomass peels off due to the cutting force between the rotating disc surface and the water surface.
Advantages
01.
The RBC process is easy to maintain and can handle significant load variations without the need for proactive adjustments
02.
The instrumentation requirements for the RBC process are minimal.
